MHSCN Beacon Awards entry deadline extended

Due Friday, July 30.

The Minnesota Health Strategy & Communications Network (MHSCN) Marketing Committee has decided to extend the deadline for entries for the 2010 Beacon Awards.

Enter your communications, marketing, public relations, community relations, planning or health care research efforts.

  • Projects must have been completed between June 1, 2008 and June 1, 2010.
  • The cost per entry is $35.
  • Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, July 30, 2010.

Based on your online survey feedback and combined with the work of last year’s Board, the 2010 Beacon Awards Program and conference will be held in the fall this year, instead in the summer. Winners will be recognized and their projects will be displayed at that time.

As in the past, the Beacon Awards Program is open to both MHSCN member and non-members. Projected completed on behalf of a member, such as by an ad agency, qualify as member entries. Members may submit as many entries as they wish.

2009 Beacon Awards Recipients Announced

The Minnesota Health Strategy & Communications Network’s 2009 Beacon Awards were announced Thursday, July 23 at the MHSCN Summer Conference in Chaska. The Beacon Awards are designed to promote effective communication about an issue that affects everyone — health care — said MHSCN Awards Chairwoman Martha Parsons. Projects range from producing employee newsletters to managing communications with the public when a crisis hits.

“We all know health care can be very complex,” Parsons said. “Even so, these winners managed to convey their messages clearly and compellingly to achieve enviable results.”

Seventeen projects were recognized with a Beacon Award. Thirteen professionals evaluated the communications, public relations, strategic planning, research and marketing projects. Recipients are named below; click here for more information about MHSCN’s Beacon Awards Program.

Metro Job Clubs

Someday you’ll probably need to find a new job - if yours is ending or changes seem to coming in your organization. That is normal - millions of Americans go through this every year. But the fact is that you’ll do better if you have a lot of help in your search.

There are more than 30 job clubs around the metro. Some are by invitation, others focused on other disciplines, but many will work for you. They include people who are looking for a job and who come out of gratitude for past assistance. They will help you learn the ropes of job search, connecting within complex organizations and what to do when you have a live opportunity.

Editorial: Power Imbalance

By Joel Stegner, Networking Chair

Another articles on reform of our healthcare system - representing no views other than those of the author.

The American Academy of Family Physicians recently released a new survey, A Report Card for 32 Payers: Not Making the Grade. Earlier an Icebreaker editorial suggested how payer discounts have reduced service coverage of and access to hospital services. This report makes the same point for physicians. Source: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/561528_print)

“In 2006, a comprehensive AMA study of the health insurance market showed “unequivocally that physicians across the country have virtually no bargaining power with dominant health insurers and that those health insurers are in a position to exert onopsony power,” that is, the power to lower the price paid for services below the price that would prevail in a competitive market. It found “Because the managed care contracts between physicians and health insurers impact so many aspects of the patient-physician relationship, the severe imbalance in bargaining power demonstrated by this study is an urgent matter that must be addressed.”
