How did you develop an interest in health care?
I love science and learning how the world works, how natural and mechanical systems operate—biology and chemistry underlie all health care issues.
Working in health care stems from my love of the outdoors. I think the greatest impact I can have on the environment is to work on social issues—especially education and population-related topics—because of the direct and indirect impacts they have on the environment. To support this, I’ve had various volunteer roles over the past 10 years including at Big Brothers Big Sisters, YWCA’s Girls Discovery Leadership, and Planned Parenthood where I currently facilitate new volunteer trainings on the basics of birth control and the basics of sexually transmitted infections.

How did you develop an interest in health care?
As my freelance writing business evolved, I began to write for heath care clients. For several years running, I wrote media relations copy for a local hospital. I interviewed physicians, nurses, and the occasional patient. I also attended several grand rounds. I was hooked!

Jessica Schiff is a marketing and communications coordinator at SISU Medical Systems and has joined the MHSCN Board as the organization’s Region 2 representative.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I lived on a farm when I was young, but over time I discovered my skills in writing tended to outweigh my science abilities.
What were your favorite classes?
My favorite classes were german and editing classes. In college, I earned a B.A. in German and a minor in Editing & Writing. I spent a few years studying and teaching in Austria. So I had plenty of both of those kinds of classes. And I think I’m a bit of an editing geek, but I fortunately in my work that’s a valuable skill to have!

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A lawyer - I liked debating with people.
What were your favorite classes?
Yearbook, Photography, Organizational Communication, Publication Design.
How did you develop an interest in health care?
By chance, I requested to complete an internship with Owatonna Clinic, and they accepted. From that point on, I realized it is a fascinating and ever changing field to work. I appreciate being innovative, a part of our community, and helping people.

How did you develop an interest in health care?
I became involved with a community youth development initiative funded, in part, by Northfield Hospital. I worked along side my predecessor on that project and learned more about the hospital and its mission.
